(Background: I'm an electrical engineer with about 8 years exp. Who specializes in digital electronics design. Though my passion is audio, I've not had the opportunity to really dive into audio circuit 'debugging and restoration' until now. So while I consider myself a noobie to this topic, I do understand electrical engineering terminology and principals--- I just have a slant towards digital rather than analog.) I've just recently been given an Audire Forte power amplifier and Diffet 2 preamplifier sans any kind of documentation (he's still looking for it). Haven't powered either of them up yet, but have plans to do so using some dummy loads and scope/meter equipment to do some probing before I connect to anything 'real'. (the stiky 'amp distortion, dc-offset.' Thread top post is very informative!) Anyhoo, I've been told by its previous owner that the Forte had it's R-ch output shorted for about 20 minutes accidentally, and that it still plays but gets warmer than the other channel. I'm suspecting simple output power transistor stress and already have several replacements on their way. (Originals are Motorola, replacements are coming from On Semi) This is my first foray into vintage (Assuming 26 yrs is considered vintage. Power transistors have date codes of '81 and '82), or any, audio 'restoration' and unfortunately I don't even have a schematic of the unit (though it's a lot simpler than some modern day stuff I've seen!). My plan of attack is to set it up and let it 'run' with a dummy load and see how the amp responds to get a baseline. And calculate dc-offset and hopefully internal leakage currents if I can. For both R & L channels. Next I want to 'clean' the R channel (L will be become my 'control' for this experiment) physically as well as measure the passive R's for any bad values, and possibly replace caps (though NONE show any *visible* signs of stress or strain currently). Serial Number. This is the serial number of the device. If unset this defaults to ffffffff. Firmware Version. This is the revision of the firmware that is currently loaded on the device. Firmware Capabilities. This field indicates which capabilities are built in to the firmware. See the below table for reference. Dsc serial number. And replace the output power transistors with the On Semi ones. (I've been told to setup a jig to try and find 'closest matching' transistors out of the ones on order, and I'd like to do that but am not yet completely sure what kind of circuit is necessary to find out how well they 'match') And anything else that is suggested to do. I'm looking to get into the vintage restoration thing this way, so I plan to take my time and really learn something. Once it's all done I would like to sit down and do a comparison of the 'control' L-ch against the 'restored' R-ch and see if I can actually HEAR any differences (new caps, new power transistors etc). Tweak as necessary (if the new output transistors don't sound as good for example), and when I'm happy, repeat the 'restoration' process on the L-ch and then put the unit into operation. As for the pre, the previous owner has not indicated any problems, but I have also not yet fired it up. ![]() I'm a little confused on its operation based on the front panel button labels, but don't have a user manual to figure it out. So my questions will start off fairly simple. 1) Does anyone have user manuals for the Diffet 2 preamp and/or Forte power amp? A scanned PDF maybe, or an extra physical copy I could buy off you? I'd like to at least have paperwork to 'complete' these nice pieces of gear. 2) Does anyone have the schematics to the diffet 2 and/or Forte pieces, to aid my restoration project? And some newly 'discovered' questions.
